I liked the movie, Valkyrie. It is a really compelling story, beautifully shot and edited. It also fields a really good cast, including a really strong contingent of UK character actors, namely, Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Izzard and Tom Wilkinson. Plus of course Tom Cruise.
Now it’s hard to separate Tom Cruise the man, from Tom Cruise the actor, but I encourage you to bite the bullet with this one and give it a chance. Cruise plays Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, one of the key German officer who plotted to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Based on a true story, the plot was to essentially rewrite and initiate Operation Valkyrie [a national emergency plan] which served to deploy the reserve army in event of Hilter [and maybe Himmler ?] death to take control of the country and effectively dismantle the Nazi army.
Stauffenberg is a really interesting character as someone completely disillusioned by war. His real injuries of war add a nice dimension to the story. And Cruise does a surprisingly good job here; really believable, well-composed and a little bit chilling.
Overall I rate this highly. If anything else a nice little history lesson.
