For some strange reason this made my week. At about 10.45am this morning a crane toppled forward trying to lift a cooling tower to the top of the Dunedin Hospital, splaying across Great King Street. Lucky no one was harmed. There is something strangely beautiful about this though, with something so enormous being weakened and exposed by the effects of something so simple, namely gravity and balance. What was more impressive is the extent to which it took to bring it back on to its feet – ie. three other big cranes. Its like a bad joke about how many cranes does it take to … ? [I can’t come up with a witty punch-line though].
You can read a little more about this big Dunedin drama slash event here [this also made the national network news too – it has been a very slow news week so far].
The above photo was taken by me from a cell [sorry not fantastic quality] and the others, below, by some else in the Medical School [though I formatted and cropped them].
